It has been a crazy couple of weeks.
I Haven’t Been Myself is real.
You can walk into a bookstore and order it, or buy it online. You can read it on Kindle Unlimited.
If I’m being honest, I wasn’t fully prepared for how much that changes things.
People are reading it.
Some people love it.
Some don’t.
That’s still okay.
A quote I heard somewhere that I can’t seem to find a source for is this:
A story that offends no one rarely moves anyone
And honestly? I spent a few days wrapping my head around the fact that it didn’t land for some people.
That leads me to my next point. My next story.
What Remains of Her is a book about institutional abuse in the 1970s.
It depicts abuse of LGBTQ+ characters that is period-appropriate.
The language can be difficult to read.
It was difficult to write.
I felt strongly enough about that reality to include a content note at the beginning of the book.
I have no doubt it will offend some people. It’s still important that this book exists.
In some ways, What Remains of Her shows how far we’ve come as a society, and how far we still need to go.
June is Pride Month. The release of this book isn’t until July second.
That was intentional.
It felt wrong to release a story like this during a month of celebrating voices that have historically been violently silenced.
So, I’m not.
Some things will offend some people.
I truly believe those things still need to be said.
Happy Pride Month.
