Vantage Point

It’s finally April.
We’re in that weird New England time of year where yesterday was 70 degrees.
Today it snowed.
As New Englanders, the best way to survive this time is to dress in layers and hope you can peel some off in the warmest parts of the day.

I’m in a very interesting place craft-wise.
I Haven’t Been Myself is on Kindle pre-sale with exactly seven weeks until release.
I’ve written three books since that first one, and just started working on a series that I am extremely excited about.

As exciting as all that is, it gives me a strange vantage point.
A lot of writers look back on their first novel and cringe at least a little. Most of them have the benefit of being able to say, “That was at the beginning of my career.”
I write so fast that I’ve outpaced my first book before I could even publish it.
And my first book is still seven weeks from release.

I’m still proud of I Haven’t Been Myself. It’s the book that literally made me an author, whether it was published or not.
But it’s strange to look at a book that the wider world doesn’t even have access to yet and think, “I have improved so much since I wrote this.”

The nicer spring weather (outside of today’s snow, anyway) always makes me reflect on the past and what I have to look forward to.
There is so much to look forward to this year.

I Haven’t Been Myself isn’t a perfect novel. But I’m not a perfect novelist.
I never will be. That’s okay.
But I will continue to learn and grow as I keep writing.

My birthday is in a couple of days, and while I’m not looking forward to the likely rain, I’m looking forward to another year of doing something that I never dreamed I’d actually get to do. Writing books.

If you’re reading this, I hope you’re staying dry and continuing to find joy in small things that bring light to your life.

Till next time.
